Frozen Yogurt With Strawberry Cheesecake at Culture

Something you should know about me: I have an affinity for almost any frozen dessert. Ice cream, gelato, custard, yogurt, even those concoctions of questionable chemical origin. If I can scoop it, I’ll probably enjoy it. This is not to say I don’t have discriminating taste – I do – but I believe that for every time and place there is an appropriate and complementary cold confection.

I’m especially spoiled. I live in Park Slope, where I have quick access to some of the most notable scoop shops in the city. If I want ice cream with a clever, textured twist, I go to Ample Hills Creamery. If I want a more refined, ultra-rich cone, I stop by Blue Marble. And if I am aiming for something a little cleaner and just a smidgen healthier, I go to Culture for their tangy homemade frozen yogurt.

Carrot Cake at Lloyd’s Carrot Cake

In the summer, the city can be a lot to take. The heat. The sweaty bodies. The smells. Oh, the smells. It’s with good reason that so many people vacate their overcrowded, under-air conditioned apartments in the months of June, July, and August and head to the Hamptons, Fire Island, or anyplace that is cooler, cleaner, and has some proximity to a beach.

Thanks to a slew of parties and appointments (and the financial peaks of high season rentals), I was one of those sad folks stuck trying to make the best of a New York summer. And you know what? It wasn’t so bad. Especially when I made use of your unlimited MetroCard to go on some local day trips.

My boyfriend, N., recently had the idea of exploring an area of the city that, until then, I had only equated with my grandmother’s assisted living home: Riverdale.

Punchim at Mimi’s Hummus

Mimi’s Hummus in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn has some of the creamiest, earthiest hummus in New York City. This is not a debatable fact. If you’ve been enjoying the goods at places like Hummus Kitchen and Hummus Place, well, you’ve been doing fine because those joints put on a fine hummus show. But Mimi’s is where it’s at. And it’s not just the hummus that is delicious. Mimi’s knows how to work a vegetable like few other reasonably priced restaurants. Eggplant “caviar” under a pool of honey (an improbable but spectacular combination), a cauliflower salad dressed liberally with tahini and parsley… I could go on, but let’s cut to the important stuff.

Like dessert.

Hello Sweeties!

Welcome to my compendium of all things dough, dessert, or delicacy, or any cross-section of the three. As you will soon see from the content of this blog, I have an irrepressible sweet tooth and would rather be eating dessert than doing most other things. Sometimes I bake for myself but more often than not I leave the production to the pros, so you’ll generally find here items that you, too, can ingest and enjoy for a modest fee.

I dwell in the Big Candy Apple of New York City, but I am of the, “Will travel for food,” persuasion. When I’m lucky enough to make it out of the concrete jungle I call home, I do my best to indulge in the items that satisfy the local sugar craving.

If you know of any treats I must try, want to say hello, or have baked a cake that is simply divine, do let me know. Nothing is better than cake and company.

Lots of love,
The Dough-Eyed Girl
